Gif Tutorial: Motion Blur Slideshow

For this tutorial I will be using images from this gallery. It was written in Photoshop CS5, but it may be used in Photoshop CS and higher.

  1. You will need at least 3 images for this effect. I will be using images from here.
  2. Paste each image onto a new document 3 times. Resize or crop if necessary. You must delete the Background layer.
  3. Click on layer 1, then go to Filter » Blur » Motion Blur…
  4. Ensure the angle is set to 0. Adjust the distance how you like. I usually find around 50 is good. Press OK. (Please note: You may not see the effect, that is because the layer is on the bottom! Don’t worry!)
  5. Click on layer 3 and press CTRL+F. This will apply a motion blur to this layer.
  6. Do the same for layer 4, layer 6, layer 7 and layer 9. You should leave the middle layer of each set of 3 unblurred, like this:
  7. Now got to Window and ensure Animation is ticked. If it’s not, click it. You should see the animation window appear at the bottom of the screen.
  8. Now look for the button shown below and click it:
  9. Then click ‘Make frames from layers’. The frames will appear.
  10. Now we want to adjust the times of each frame. Look for this button:
  11. For all the blurred frames, hit that button then go to Other… and type in 0.01.
  12. For all the non-blurred frames, set this time to 0.5.
  13. Press the play button to see how it looks. It may play a little slower than it would normally.
  14. When you are happy, go to File » Save for Web & Devices…
  15. Play around with the settings until you’re satisfied with how it looks and then press save!

That’s it! If you found this helpful, please like or reblog this post. If there is something that you don’t understand, my ask box is always open! :)

Gif Tutorial: Making an Animated Gif from a Video

This tutorial explains how to make an animated gif from a video. It is written for people with a basic understanding of Photoshop and its tools. You will need Photoshop CS or higher and Quicktime.

Saving a Video:

First, you need have a video! If you don’t already have one saved, you can download straight from YouTube. There are several sites that allow you to do this. I normally use Savevid.com. Simply copy the YouTube URL, paste it into the box on SaveVid and hit download.

You’ll need to download an MP4 of the video. If you want a better quality gif, download one of the HD videos. They’re usually bigger files so they’ll take longer to download but it’s worth it! Once you saved your video you’re ready to make a gif!

Making the gif

  1. Open up photoshop. Go to Window and ensure Animation is ticked.
  2. Then go to File » Import  » Video frames to layers…
  3. You will see the following appear on your screen, ensure your setting are the same as mine:
  4. Find the point on the video that you want to turn into a gif - remember it must only be a very short clip! Holding down shift, move the slider to select this clip. Click OK
  5. You will see the frames appear at the bottom of the window. If you only see a timeline, press this button in the right hand corner:
  6. Delete any unwanted frames. To do this, select the frame by clicking it and then click on the little trash can icon.
  7. If you need to crop the image at all, do this now. For example, if you want to remove a black border.
  8. Resize the image width to 500px or smaller (so that it will work on Tumblr!). To do this go to Image » Image size…
  9. When you are happy with you gif, go to File» Save for Web & Devices…
  10. A new window will appear on the screen. From here you can choose the number of colours in the gif and the type of diffusion used. In order to work on Tumblr, gifs must be below 1MB. Play around with the setting until you get it to the right size. The image below will give you an idea of how to do this:
  11. Once you’re happy, hit save!

Hopefully this tutorial will get you started in learning to make gifs. It takes a lot of practice! If you have any questions, my ask box is always open!
